NRECA International has designed and implemented rural electrification projects in over 40 countries over the past 45 years. In most cases, NRECA International is a sole source project implementing agency that carries out the project from initial system design through construction to utility start up operation. Although the scope of rural electrification projects varies, the project activities generally include:
- Sizing and installation of adequate generation capacity to meet long-term load demand,
- Design of primary and secondary distribution systems,
- Construction and/or managing a subcontractor for distribution system construction,
- Consumer connections and street lighting,
- Operation and management of interim utility, and
- Training of utility personnel.
In 2005, NRECA International was contracted by USAID’s Sudan Field Office to develop a distributed generation system for the town of Yei. The town of Yei had been severely damaged by over 20 years of civil conflict and the limited electricity infrastructure was completely destroyed. In Phase I of the Project, NRECA International installed generation, constructed a primary backbone distribution system, and streetlight illumination. Phase II of the Project is ongoing and includes expansion of the distribution system to serve residential, commercial, institutional, and small industrial clients in Yei, additional generation capacity to meet long-term projected load, and utility personnel training in system maintenance and operation.
