NRECA International Programs
Nigeria

Nigeria is Africa’s most densely populated and diverse nation, with an estimated 140 million people comprising over 250 distinct ethnic groups distributed over a land mass of 923, 000 square kilometers (about twice the size of California)

Less than ten percent of rural Nigerians enjoy electric service, potable water supply, and other essential services.  Even in more urbanized areas, electric service is extremely poor and characterized by constant service interruptions that negatively impact business and residential consumers alike.

NRECA International is currently providing technical assistance in utility operations and management to Geometric Power Limited (GPL) and their subsidiary, Aba Power Limited (APL), to significantly improve upon the quality of electric service delivery in the city of Aba, the capital of Abia State.  GPL is in the process of developing a 140 MW power station, and plans to refurbish and manage the electric distribution system in and around the city of Aba.

Aba is a heavily industrialized city but nearly all industries have been forced to invest heavily in self-generation due to frequent power cuts and extremely poor power quality.  Some industries have chosen to disconnect from the distribution network entirely, while others have been forced out of business due to the extraordinarily high costs of self-generation. The inefficiencies of small diesel generators, the high cost of fuel, and the lack of a high quality supply of electricity have placed a large economic burden on the community of Aba.

NRECA International has a team of GIS and utility commercial and management specialists in Aba to support the project and deliver reliable electric service that will support economic development and improve the quality of life for the community.
