The NRECA International Foundation coordinates overseas volunteer programs to connect experts on electric infrastructure and cooperatives with areas in developing countries seeking to establish electric co-ops.
Members of U.S. electric cooperatives volunteer their time and labor to go abroad and train members of a local community how to use and maintain electric infrastructure and how to operate a cooperative. Because the local populace becomes trained in how to run electric cooperatives themselves, they become the owners of their own electrification and they are able to run it long after the volunteers leave.
Volunteers are responsible for physically bringing electricity abroad. Their work is essential to the electrification of the developing world.
