Yemen: Rural Electrification Project Signing Ceremony

NRECA International, Ltd. participated in a project award signing ceremony at the Ministry of Planning and International Cooperation that was attended by senior officials of the Government of Yemen and the United States, respectively. US Embassador to Yemen Stephen Seche and Deputy Minister for Economic Affairs Abdul-Karim al-Arhabi formally signed a grant agreement between the United States Trade & Development Agency and the Ministry of Electricity and Energy of the Government of Yemen to support the establishment of a rural electrification program in Yemen.

NRECA International was selected by the Ministry of Electricity and Energy to execute the project. The overally objective of the project is to design the legal and regulatory framework to support rural electrification, establish a new rural electrification agency, and support the formation of local electric cooperatives. The technical assistance will culminate in the demonstration of a model electric cooperative to be formed in the Ibb Governorate of Yemen.

NRECA International previously collaborated with the Ministry of Electricity and Energy on the development of a national rural electrification strategy that was funded by the World Bank. The strategy includes a $260 million investment plan for rural electric distribution infrastructure development, as well as an institutional framework for service delivery to rural consumers.
