Cooperative Development Program 

NRECA International utilizes funding from USAID’s Cooperative Development Program (CDP)  to promote the electric co-op model as a proven system for delivering electricity services to rural areas of developing countries. NRECA International’s CDP activities are designed to develop and support new and existing electric cooperatives through legal and regulatory reform, training and capacity building, and information and knowledge dissemination.

NRECA International’s current CDP activities include:

  • Information and Knowledge Dissemination
  • Training and Capacity Building
  • New Cooperative Development Initiatives

Program Accomplishments

  • Organization and formal registration of the first electric cooperative in Southern Sudan
  • Passage of major legal and regulatory reforms in the Republic of Yemen, including the Electricity Law, Decree establishing new Rural Electrification Authority, and the first electric cooperative
  • Publication of comprehensive Guides for Electric Cooperative Development and Rural Electrification
  • Passage of major power sector and cooperative lefal and regulatory reforms in the Republic of Yemen
  • Major contributions to CLARITY (PDF) and METRICS publications
  • Initiation of electric cooperative development projects in several African countries
